24.3 Conclusions

Early mobilization and rehabilitation in the ICU is rapidly evolving with several RCTs being developed and published. The implementation of these measures is feasible and considered to be safe, though some barriers must be addressed (inadequate staffing of physical and occupational therapists in ICUs; intubation and sedation of these patients). They play an important role in reducing the duration of mechanical ventilation, hospital stay and restauration of functional independence at hospital discharge to these patients. Also in palliative care patients, rehabilitation is being increasingly implemented.

However many questions remain to be answered like uniformization of procedures and selection of type, frequency, intensity and duration of interventions.
